Find Your “Why Power.”Before you try to implement any new habits or lifestyle changes, figure out why you want or need to do it. No matter what changes you are trying to make in your life, author and publisher of Success magazine Darren Hardy says in his book The Compound Effect (Affiliate Link) that “Your choices are only meaningful when you connect them to your desires and dreams.” This is what he calls “why power.” It will always be much more effective than relying on willpower because willpower only focuses on what it is you’re trying to do. In a moment of weakness, willpower can fail you at any point.

Stop multitasking. Multitasking may be something we take great pride in, but it’s actually draining for our life, health and joy, and it may actually make us less efficient instead of more. According to the American Psychological Association, a study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance shows that for complicated or unfamiliar tasks, it takes extra time to shift mental gears every time a person switches between the two tasks.This switch can take several tenths of a second, which is a significant amount of time for some tasks and can add up when you’re trying to get something done.

Transpersonal therapist and author Dr. Shannon South, LPC, ThD believes that by multitasking, “we’re only 50 percent present to our lives.” We’re not truly paying attention to any one thing that we’re doing, so there’s not an opportunity to find or appreciate joy in anything. If we’re constantly multitasking, our lives come down to how many things we can check off at once as opposed to fully being present.
