  1. Dehydrator. A food dehydrator removes moisture from food to help preserve it. They’re perfect for drying fruits, vegetables, seeds, herbs and meat. Here’s a great article that lists the best food dehydrators on the market today and that explains how they work. On average, they range in price from about $40 – $225.
  2. Containers and starter plants for container gardening. If Mom has a green thumb or she’s been wanting to try to grow some plants, this is the year of the container garden (so declared by me!). Buying supplies for a container garden makes a wonderful Mother’s Day present because it may not be something that she had really thought of before, or she may have been a little overwhelmed with where and how to start. Plus, while the summer’s worth (or even longer) of fresh fruit, vegetables or herbs will definitely pay off in the long run, paying for the supplies to get started may not have been in Mom’s budget. This is a great way to help get her going and help her save money in the long run. It’s also a fabulous option if mobility is limited because container gardens can be done in a small space and can easily be raised for easy access. The cost is dependent on whether seeds or starter plants are used, how many containers are needed and buying soil.
  3. Reiki appointment. Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing. The International Center for Reiki Training says that “It is administered by ‘laying on hands’ and is based on the idea that an unseen ‘life force energy’ flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s ‘life force energy’ is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. A Reiki session typically costs between $55-$100 depending on how long it lasts.
  4. Pilates or yoga classes or sessions. Pilates works the core and the spine while at the same time, working the whole body. Sessions can be scheduled in a one-on-one session with a Pilates teacher, in a group session or in larger classes at a fitness center. They can also be done with equipment or without. Prices for private sessions usually run $50-$75 for a single session and then can usually be included in a package for a cheaper price per session. Individual sessions make great gifts because it’s the best way to start so that Mom can learn the movements correctly. Once she’s mastered the basic technique, she can attend cheaper group sessions or classes if she wants. Yoga classes are also great gifts – especially if Mom has been wanting to try it but didn’t want to spend the money because she wasn’t sure if she would like it. Yoga is practiced for both health and relaxation and involves breathing techniques, exercise and meditation. It’s important to learn about the different types of Yoga before purchasing any classes so that you can make sure the type you want is what’s being taught. The average price for individual classes is between $12-$16.
  5. Workout clothes. No matter Mom’s age, she needs to look and, most importantly, feel good when she’s working out. This doesn’t have to mean spandex or tight-fitting, it could be a nice sweatsuit, yoga pants and a top or anything else that fits her personality and the types of exercising she does or will be doing. Let’s face it, it’s often hard to justify spending money on workout clothes for yourself, which is why it’s perfect to receive them as a gift. Prices can vary widely depending on whether you’re doing Lululemon, Athleta, a sporting goods store, department store, Target or Walmart.
  6. Yoga or exercise mat.A yoga or exercise mat is handy for yoga or any kind of floor exercises where Mom would want a cushioned barrier between herself and the floor. The main things to look for is a mat that has good grip so that it won’t be sliding all over the floor and that provides plenty of cushioning to support her joints. Here’s a great article that rates The 8 Best Yoga Mats of 2019. Prices can range anywhere between $15 – $150.
  7. Meditation training or app subscription. Meditation is good for anyone at any age, so training with a teacher or getting a subscription to a meditation app makes a wonderful gift that could truly affect Mom’s quality of life. Again, this is one of those things that is often hard to do for ourselves but that’s perfect for a gift. While you don’t have to have a teacher to meditate, it can be helpful and a quick way to see results to have someone else guiding you through the process. Private lessons can cost anywhere from $25 – $135 per hour depending on the teacher, type of lesson and your location, while classes can run anywhere from $10 – $25 per class depending on the type of package you get. There are also a number of sites (such as Inspired Meditations) that offer individual guided meditations that can be downloaded for between $5-$10. If you know that Mom would like guided meditations long-term, Headspace is a great app that offers an annual subscription for $95.88 or monthly family plans for $19.99 a month. Transcendental Meditation costs $960 for the course that teaches how to do it. While this isn’t something I’ve tried, there are many people who say it’s well worth the cost. It’s a one-time expense that equips the practitioner with the skills they’ll use for the rest of their life. Maybe a joint present for Mom between siblings?
  8. Stainless steel water bottle. Drinking enough water every day is critical at any point but especially as we age. Every organ, cell and tissue in our body depends on water to function properly. That’s why a water bottle big enough to keep Mom on track makes a great gift. If we’re honest, we tend to drink what’s in front of us. We’re just as likely to drink a 40-ounce bottle of water as we are a 16-ounce bottle of water if that’s what we have on hand. So, the larger the better, as long as it’s something that Mom would easily carry around with her. Stainless steel bottles are environmentally friendly, easy to clean and a terrific alternative to plastic water bottles. The one I use and love is Klean Kanteen’s Classic Stainless Steel 40-ounce Water Bottle (Affiliate Link). The price is $27.15, and it makes for a very thoughtful, yet practical gift.
  9. Dinner or lunch made from local ingredients from your local Farmer’s Market. While this idea is obviously contingent on seeing your Mom in person on Mother’s Day, it’s a wonderful way to put a lot of thought and effort into your gift while ensuring that it’s as healthy and delicious as possible. What’s better is to take a photo of each of the vendors where you buy your ingredients and display them in a way that showcases where everything came from. The cost will vary depending on what’s on the menu, but the memory of a completely local meal will be priceless for everyone involved.
  10. Flowers from the Farmer’s Market. Flowers are always a good bet for Mother’s Day but getting a local bouquet from the Farmer’s Market is a sure thing. In my experience, you can buy an arrangement that includes all of one type of flower or you can get a bouquet that has many different varieties. Just like with the local dinner or lunch ingredients, if you can find out the vendor’s story and have a photo of them, it will make your gift so much more personal. How is a beautiful flower arrangement good for Mom’s health? Just see the smile on her face every time she looks at it, and you’ll get your answer. Depending on your location, flower arrangements at the Farmer’s Market usually run between $8-$30.

Hopefully, these ideas will help make the process of finding the perfect gift for Mom a little easier this year. The main thing is that you find something that you truly enjoy giving her, and she’ll definitely enjoy receiving it. Here’s to a very Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!
