Increase your muscle power. That’s the message from a study presented recently at EuroPrevent 2019, a congress of the European Society of Cardiology. Study author Professor Claudio Gil Araújo, director of research and education, Exercise Medicine Clinic – CLINIMEX, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is quoted in Science Daily saying that “Rising from a chair in old age and kicking a ball depend more on muscle power than muscle strength, yet most weight bearing exercise focuses on the latter.” The study shows that people with more muscle power tend to live longer – something that’s important to know because our muscle power gradually starts to decrease after age 40.

So how do you increase your muscle power? Go beyond typical strength training and add speed to your weight lifts. That means don’t just think about the amount of weight being lifted and the number of repetitions, but also think about how quickly the weights are being lifted.
