Eat more fruits and vegetables. A recent study presented at the American Society for Nutrition annual meeting found that suboptimal fruit and vegetable intake each contribute to a significant number of cardiovascular disease deaths each year. Nearly 2.8 million deaths globally per year from coronary heart disease and stroke can be blamed on not eating enough fruits and vegetables. Among the most populous countries, China had the largest number of deaths from suboptimal fruit intake and India from people not eating enough vegetables. The study defines optimal fruit intake as 300 grams per day and optimal vegetable intake (including legumes) as 400 grams per day.
