Healthy Action Step of the Day: Celebrate Victories (both big and small)

Celebrate victories (both big and small). Celebrating victories – both big and small – for ourselves and those close to us is extremely good for our mental health. My youngest son is a crazy hard sleeper and has a really hard time getting up in the mornings. He just started high school and on the first morning, after barely being able to get to any appointment that happened before 10am this summer, he set his new alarm, got up immediately and got himself in the shower well before the 5-minute window that we agreed I would give him before going in to make sure he was really up. Not only that, he was extremely pleasant to be around and clearly felt good because he had actually gotten the nine hours of sleep that he definitely requires. If that’s not a VICTORY worth celebrating, I don’t know what is. It may seem like a small thing, but for him, this was huge! And my being genuinely excited about it for him, truly seemed to reinforce how good he was already feeling.

We also need to be that supportive of ourselves and fully recognize when we achieve something we set out to do or when we simply show restraint in a situation that we and others normally can’t get through unscathed. Yes, if it’s something that has to be done on a daily basis, it becomes less of a special occasion and more of just what we do, and that’s the way it should be. But then, there will be some other victory to celebrate and plenty more reasons to recognize that we are constantly growing, changing and improving – no matter whether we’re 14 or 48.
