Celebrate National Chocolate Day with healthy dark chocolate. I am not trying to support the chocolate industry here because, let’s face it, there are a lot of unhealthy chocolates out there. At the same time, I do love chocolate. Because it does help to lift my mood, I try to save it for when I know I’m going to have a tough week and then eat it a little at a time over the course of the week. Did you know though, that this mood-lifting power apparently may not be from any mood-lifting chemicals as we once thought but simply because of the endorphins and ‘happy feelings’ associated with eating it? Read more on that in this Science Focus article. Either way, it usually helps to do the trick for me.
Like I mentioned though, we have to be VERY picky with our chocolate. Dark chocolate – with 70 percent or higher cocoa content – is the absolute best. There’s still a lot of research out there that touts the benefits of chocolate, but let’s be clear – dark chocolate is what’s being referred to, not your general off-the-shelf candy bars. So if you’re going to eat chocolate, make sure it’s the good, dark stuff produced by fair trade companies who treat their laborers right. My favorite brand is Green & Black’s Organic 85 percent dark chocolate.
