Healthy Action Step of the Day: Don’t Put Off Until Tomorrow What You Can Do Today

1020 - procrastinate

Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. In other words, don’t procrastinate! We often think of procrastinating as putting off doing things that we don’t want to do. But we also do it for many things that we want to do but are afraid for some reason, don’t think it’s the right time or there’s not enough money. All of which may be true, but if that’s the case, start taking small steps today toward doing whatever it is that you want to do. If you don’t have enough money to take that vacation that you want to go on, start saving for it today. Sit down and figure out generally how much it will cost and where you can find places in your budget to save or to earn extra money. Then, as you’re in the process of saving, start setting aside time to plan where you want to go and what you want to do when you get there. Once you start saving and know that it’s going to happen, you can go ahead and start enjoying thinking about your vacation spot. It’s the next best thing to actually being there.

The same thing goes for starting a new career. If now really isn’t the time to take the leap, what can you start doing today, and tomorrow and the day after that to start working toward your goal? Is there a class that you should be taking, learning through free resources or online or books that you should be reading? Start today!

Or it may simply be saying yes to getting together with friends or joining a group that you really want to join but you’re right in the middle of a big project. You may truly not have time right now for it, and that’s fine. But it may be that what you’re putting off doing until “everything’s done” will never happen if you wait until that point. And it may actually be better for you to go ahead and allow yourself a break so that you can come back to whatever it is refreshed and with creative juices flowing.

Even if you can’t jump fully into whatever you want to do today, take steps to start getting you there. Before you know it, you will be doing what you want to do, and you will have experienced the joy from the small steps you’ve taken along the way.
