Healthy Action Step of the Day: Eat Several Meals a Week by Yourself

Eat several meals a week by yourself. This may seem counterintuitive to the idea of using meal times to connect or re-connect with friends and family, but if at all possible, try to eat by yourself at some points during the week. Lunch is usually best for this because breakfast and dinner are wonderful opportunities to connect with your family. If you work in an office, find a bench or place to sit outside where you can just be by yourself. If you work from home or have small children at home, take a few minutes to stop what you’re doing and appreciate the food as you’re eating it. That is the whole point in this exercise – to really taste the food, appreciate its texture and think about how it’s making you feel.

I will be the first to say that this is a challenge for me. I am the queen of working through lunch because why “waste” that time when I could be getting work done? Wrong attitude! While it’s probably not possible to simply sit and enjoy our food for every lunch, there is something powerful about carving this time out – no working, no reading, no scrolling through social media or the internet. Just focus on your food. This eases digestion, is a type of mindfulness practice and may even help you lose weight. When you think about it in that way, this is some of the most productive time you may spend all week!
