Taking at least 20 minutes at least three times a week to get outside to stroll or sit in a place that helps you connect with nature will significantly lower your stress hormone levels. A study published recently in Frontiers in Psychology calls these “nature pills,” because they have a real measurable effect. This was the first study where participants were free to choose the time of day, duration, and the place of a nature experience in response to personal preference and changing daily schedules. The results show that what’s done as an activity doesn’t seem to affect the cortisol response, it’s simply connecting with nature that does seem to make the difference.
