Be genuinely interested in others. In Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy, Sarah Ban Breathnach says that “When we are genuinely interested in others, a graciousness comes over us that is compelling.” This effort benefits us because it helps to bring meaning to every moment. It benefits those we are interacting with because it makes them feel like they have our complete and genuine attention and that what they’re saying truly matters because they matter – something we all want to feel whether we’re at work or at home.

Sarah suggests that we can start this today by not rushing our encounters with co-workers, family and friends and to act as if every conversation we have is the most important thing on our minds – no matter how busy we are. Then she challenges us to see how different we feel at the end of the day. I know for a fact that this works. When I can do this, both my mind and my body are in an entirely different place than when I rush through the day acting as if checking off my to do list is the most important thing as opposed to my interactions with others.
